Homelessness in America
The 2012 Summer Olympics are underway and we are pulling together as a nation to root for our team. After all, we are proud to be from the U.S. – the first country based on the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
But while our athletes in London break records and win medals, we as a country are breaking other records back home. As we shared last month, for the first time in history, public schools reported more than one million homeless children and youth!
A recent Huffington Post article highlights that we are a country that has let homelessness rise to an outrageous number.
So while cheering for our extraordinary athletes these coming weeks, remember what it means to be American.
And keep in mind that “responding to the growing epidemic of homelessness is not simply an act of charity,” as the author of the article states. “It’s an essential way to live out our most traditional myths of what it means to be a good American.”
