3rd annual Back 2 School Festival for homeless students
This past Saturday, Coalition for the Homeless celebrated its 3rd Annual Back 2 School Festival, and what a day it was!
Starting with breakfast from Aircraft Service International Group (ASIG), our homeless students spent the day preparing for the upcoming school year.
First United Methodist Church of Winter Park Children’s Ministry, RCI, and Staples donated school supplies for every school-aged child. Each student also received a new backpack thanks to ASIG, CNL Center, and Office Depot. Our 2-4 year old tykes were not forgotten either, as ASIG supplied sleep mats and mini backpacks.
In addition, SunTrust provided new jeans for all, First Unitarian Church of Orlando supplied new sneakers, and Paul Mitchell – The School gave haircuts. Andrew Gomes, an eagle scout, made hygiene bags too, which our moms and dads appreciated!
Coalition youngsters enjoyed abounce housedonated by Ron Jon Cape Caribe Resort and an inflatable obstacle course.
And while the music provided by Rollins College filled the air, faces were painted, Bill Terry entertained as PJ the Clown, and freshly made popcorn courtesy of Ralph Addington filled everyone’s tummies.
To top the day off, Sonny’s BBQ prepared a delicious lunch.
Thank you SO MUCH to our wonderful sponsors and volunteers for sending our homeless students back to school feeling confident and prepared!
Stayed tuned this Wednesday as contributing blogger, Dan Beckmann, takes a look at the staggering number of homeless students in our own backyard. It’s back to school for Central Florida kids! But for some, it’s back to a “home” where bedrooms have been replaced by cars and crowded motel rooms…
